Privacy Policy

Your privacy is important! One of Jeanne’s pet issues is personal internet security — and we want you to feel comfortable with what data is collected and how we use it.

If you wish to opt out of analytics tracking:

A site-specific tracking opt-out for The Ugly Porcelain Cat is being developed.

If you wish to opt out of all Google Analytics tracking on every website (not just this one), Google makes an analytics opt-out plugin for browsers.

Who we are

This is the personal website of S. Hargrave and Jeanne H. Walton. The website address is The Ugly Porcelain Cat. You can contact us at any time through the contact form or by leaving a comment.

Jeanne and Hargrave are the sole administrators of the site.

Jeanne manages and develops all aspects of the website. If you have a question about data or the technical aspects of the website, please direct your query to her.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

We collect several types of data:

  • User profile information
  • User profile information provided by the social login function
  • Comments (left anonymously or by a logged in user — collects email address and IP for spam prevention)
  • Contact form submissions
  • Anonymous analytics data
  • Recaptcha spam verification information (anonymous)
  • Mailing list subscription (email address and name)

This data is collected for the sole purpose of administrating and administering the website and its mailing list to the best of our abilities.

Security

This website is run on a secure cloud-based server and distributed over a secure and encrypted web protocol (HTTPS). HTTPS is designed to keep any information given safe. Anti-malware software secures the website. All contact form submissions are transmitted using encrypted email protocol (TLS), and verified with SPF and DKIM records that help keep the information you’ve sent secure and private.

Social Login

‘Login with Social’ creates a user login using your chosen social media data. The data collected is based on your privacy settings on your account at the Social Login provider. Please note that this data is converted to a user profile, including (but not limited to) email address, social media account, and username. After your first login, you will be able to use this profile to log in at The Ugly Porcelain Cat.

Analytics

This website uses Google Analytics for traffic monitoring. It collects some anonymous analytic information, which is stored securely in Google’s servers.

This information includes: country of IP origin, length of time spent on the site, pages visited, date and time pages were visited, browsers used to visit the site, devices used to visit the site, browser language, percentage of visitors who return to the site, and how the site acquired visitors (search, social media, direct URL input).

It does not include demographic information or any advertisement profiling information.

We use tracking information to determine what sort of content appeals to our audiences, how many visitors the website attracts, and what countries our audience comes from. It is not used for marketing purposes.

For more information, please refer to Google Analytics’ privacy policy.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address, email address, and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

The comment text and chosen username are visible publicly.

IP address and email address are only visible to website administrators. Spam detection results are only visible to website administrators.

Cookies

Cookies are little bits of code that are saved in your browser. Most cookies are used to provide website functionality. They are not stored on the website server; they are stored in your browser. Some cookies expire, others do not.

You have choices when it comes to cookies. You can:

  1. Set your browser not to accept cookies. (Instructions can be found by searching for your browser and ‘cookie settings’.) Remember to clear your cookie cache afterwards!
  2. Not select ‘Remember Me’ when you post a comment.
  3. Post comments anonymously and not create a user login.
  4. Choose to accept the cookies.

Comment Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website. This will be saved in a browser cookie. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. They also allow you to edit or delete your comment while it is awaiting moderation. These cookies will last for one year.

These cookies are only set for users without an account.

Login Cookies

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select ‘Remember Me’, your login cookie will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics creates a number of cookies. These cookies are used:

  • To distinguish users and sessions. The data that is collected from these cookies is anonymized before it leaves your browser. These cookies last two years and are updated on every visit.
  • To throttle request rates. These cookies ensure that only one set of data is sent, even if the browser is refreshed many times. This prevents DDoS attacks. These cookies last for ten minutes.
  • To track visitors that visit the site again very quickly. These cookies update on every visit and last for thirty minutes.
  • To track when visitors leave the site on each visit. These cookies last only until you leave the site.
  • To track the source you used to visit the site (direct input, search results, social media referral). These cookies are updated on every visit and last for six months.

You can opt out of analytic tracking at any time.

Who We Share Your Data With

No one.

The Ugly Porcelain Cat does not advertise. We do not share any data with outside parties. Our only third-party service provider is Google. All the analytic data we collect is anonymous. The only data collection done on this site is for the purpose of running the site (comments, user creation, spam verification, contact form submissions), understanding our audience (anonymous analytic data without demographic information), or operating our mailing lists.

Anonymous analytic tracking data and spam prevention scoring is stored in Google’s servers. For more information see the Google privacy policy. You can also opt-out of tracking.

No data collected here will ever be used for creating advertising profiles or remarketing advertising. No data collected here will ever be sold.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. The metadata is kept so that we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. The comment is kept so that other people may read it.

For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their own personal information at any time (except for their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

The web server stores submissions made through the contact form indefinitely, including your name, email address, and the message sent.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us (such as user profile information or contact form submissions). You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Since the analytic data is anonymous, it cannot be deleted or exported for a single user. If you wish for analytic data not to be collected, please follow the opt-out instructions.

Where we send your data

An automated spam detection service checks our contact form and comments. Specifically, this website uses Google’s ReCAPTCHA service, Version 3. Please see their site for further information.

Analytic data is stored on the Google Analytics server. For more information, please refer to Google Analytics’ privacy policy.

Contact Information

If you wish to have your data exported or deleted, or have any other privacy concerns, please contact Jeanne using the contact form.
